I am in a process of de-cluttering, it is gradual and it is slow,
but it is happening!
I have had in the linen cupboard, a used mattress protector, one without elastic bands to hold it on. ( In its former life, it covered a waterbed bladder so the elastic bands were just extraneous). That aside, I wondered what I could do with it. Not really hygienic to donate it to the thrift shop is it? NO good to anyone without elastic bands, which I could re-attach, but is it worth the cost of elastic and the effort? I think not…
Then a brainwave hit me…. The dog would love it. Best check that first....
Dog mat Trials:
Step 1. Cut mattress protector in half lengthways. Fold each half, in half lengthwise again. You should have a piece around 1 metre by 1/2 metre or so, depending on whether you used a Queen or Double protector.
Step 2. Sew all around the permeter using zig zag or straight stitch. It is quite thick so you may need to use a different foot on your machine. Contrasting thread colour looks nice.
Step 3 Test that dog will accept new mat ….call the dog and say “mat”
Step4. Trial successful! Mat has been claimed and dog in situ.
Now it is time to enhance the bed with a few simple designs or if you are feeling particularly energetic, ( which I wasn’t today) a new cover made of fleece or used old flannelette sheet, or cotton towelling fabric. At least something that will be durable and withstand the washing machine claws!
Naive decoration of Dog Mat
Step 1. Remove dog from mat.
Step 2. Select a half drop or crazy random design and decorate to your heart’s content using fabric marker (permanent) In other words, give the markers to the kids and let their imagination take over.
You can even decorate the reverse side if you wish. Now you have a quick Sunday project, kept the kids and the dogs happy…. enjoy.

Hey – great blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a really nice platform you are using. I’m currently using WordPress for a few of my blogs but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?
